As a country we are becoming more and more health conscience everyday, understanding that “an ounce of prevention” is really worth “a pound of cure”. However, many Americans are still making little effort to protect their eyes from Ultraviolet rays.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology stresses the need to protect your eyes from the UV rays. UV rays can damage the surface of the eye and the interior structures, such as, the lens and the retina. Long term exposure can lead to cataracts, macular degeneration or skin cancer around the eyelids. We need to remember that sun damage to the eyes does not just occur during the summer. Single outings on very bright days, anytime of year can cause harm. Excessive exposure to ultraviolet light reflected off sand, snow or pavement can cause damage.
The following are some tips from the American Optometric Association to help prevent further eye damage from exposure to UV radiation.
- Wear protective eyewear any time your eyes are exposed to UV light, even on cloudy days and during winter months.
- Look for quality sunglasses that offer good protection. Sunglasses should have both UV-A and UV-B radiation and screen out 75 to 90 percent of the imperfection.
- Wear a broad -rimmed hat to protect your eyes.
- Don’t forget protection for children and teenagers. They typically spend more time in the sun than adults.
Eyewear that absorbs UV rays offers the most protection. All types of eyewear, including prescription and non prescription glasses should absorb UV-A and UV-B rays. We all need to take responsibility for preventing future health problems for ourselves and our children. You will be glad you did!
