Taking Care of Your Sunglasses and Goggles

When you have sunglasses or goggles, you must take care of them properly so they can last you for a long time and stay in good condition. Below are guidelines to ensure proper maintenance for your sunglasses and goggles.

Sunglasses

Your sunglasses should have come with a sunglass case. If they did not, be sure that you purchase one that you will use for storage when your sunglasses are not in use. A sunglass case will prevent any scratches, dings or other accidents that will damage your sunglasses. Always carry your case with you everywhere you go, so when you’re not wearing your sunglasses you can put them away.

When you clean your sunglasses, always use an eyeglass or sunglass cleaning solution. These solutions are specially formulated to clean your glasses gently and safely. The solution works to keep the lenses soft and works as a barrier to prevent scratching due to dust particles. Always use a soft cloth when cleaning the lenses. Hard or abrasive materials such as paper towels, tissue and newspaper will lead to scratching. The best type of cloth is one made of microfibers. Not only will this material be gentle on the sunglass lens but it is also effective in cleaning difficult substances such as smudges, oil or grease stains and sunscreen stains. The second best type of fabric is cloth.

Do not wear your sunglasses as a headband, in doing so you stretch the arms of the sunglasses and before long you will have to get them repaired or refit them yourself. When removing the sunglasses, use both hands instead of one and be gentle while doing so. Snatching off your sunglasses or taking them off with one hand, is how sunglasses become tilted and bent. And never leave them in extremely hot temperatures as the lenses and frames will soften and may become misshaped.

Goggles

Just as with sunglasses, always place your goggles inside their case when not in use. Never throw or place them in your bag, car or any other place. Always place your goggles with the lens-side up when you set your goggles down.

Cleaning your goggles is the same as cleaning your sunglasses. Be sure not to use any rough or hard cloth to clean them. Always use an eyeglass spray or solution and use a soft cloth. You may have heard some people say that it is okay to clean goggles with a glass cleaner but this is not true. Glass cleaners contain ammonia and the ammonia can damage a goggle’s anti-fog treatment.

When you need to de-fog your goggles, gently blot the moisture with eyeglass cloth. For problematic fogging, you can purchase a spray anti-fog solution that sprays on and wipes off.
