I’ve been swimming for years and have written lots of stories about lessons learned at the pool. And the hits just keep on coming. New goggles! Who’d have thought they’d inspire a story?
My old goggles, though worn and foggy, still fit, so I’d put off buying new ones. I guess I’d gotten used to the fog and didn’t notice it anymore. But when I put the new ones on, things were suddenly so clear–crisp lane lines, sparkling blue water, sun shining through the new roof. I could see under water all the way to the back wall. I felt like I was swimming in a brand new pool, and of course, I was.
A Whole New World
And I got to thinking about how we see our individual worlds and how clear (or not) our goggles are. Instead of scratches, chlorine, and general wear and tear, our world-view goggles can become clouded by judgment, expectation, fear and a hundred other contaminants. I can be influenced by what I see (or don’t see) through a clouded and distorted version of what’s really there. I don’t notice the fog because it builds up over time and becomes reality.
If, for example, I perceive the world as competitive, dangerous, and self-serving, I behave accordingly. And, further, I only see actions that make it through that particular filter. Positive, generous and life-affirming acts are filtered out. However, if through accident or conscious intention I develop a new perspective–the world’s not against me, I just had an off day–I’m looking at a whole new world and find evidence to support my belief.
For many years, I wore life goggles that confirmed a strong belief: “If it is to be, it’s up to me.” They served well. I got a lot done and never worried or depended on others. A combination of accidents, illness, and conscious intention got me to try on new goggles, and I discovered a world where others could feel helpful, capable, and appreciated; where energy flowed from mutual support, and life was more fun.
Inventing Your Life
How clear are your goggles? Is your world view supporting or impairing your way of life? Creating or draining energy? I can’t think of a better way to welcome spring than to remember that our power of creativity is always at the ready. We’re inventing our lives moment to moment. How are you inventing yours?
