How To Remove Scratches In The Lens of Sunglasses

A famously expensive pair of sunglasses, and prescription eye wear, is something worth taking care of. After all, if you damage them in any way, you can expect a hefty repair bill. If you are only worried over a scuff or small scratch, you can fix the problem yourself for less money.

Before trying to fix anything yourself, see if the eye glasses are under warranty. If they are, the problem is already solved: take them to wherever you got them and demand a replacement. Not all warranties cover accidents, so be sure to check before demanding a replacement. Also note that by doing the repair yourself, you are liable for all damages, and can damage your glasses further rather than paying more for the fix.

Most sunglasses are plastic: this is to your advantage. Glass sunglasses and glass prescription eye wear can’t be easily fixed. If you do happen to have glass lenses, you will have to replace the lens at your earliest convenience. Glass is seldom used anymore, however, since it can be dangerous when broken and is a very heavy material.

Assuming the material is plastic, you can usually get by with just using lens cleaner and a microfiber cloth, and then trying to rub out the scratches. It’s a cheap fix: you can get a cleaning kit for about $10 or less, depending on the kit. Do note that this only works for small scratches, and that this will not work for heavy scratches or crevasses.

Determine if your sunglasses have been coated with scratch resistant material. If they have been, you can use an abrasive to rub the scratches out. Assuming the microfiber fix didn’t help, you will need a special abrasive for cleaning lenses, as recommended by the manufacturer of the lens. Be cautious, as you can scuff your eye glasses more if you use an abrasive on the wrong type of lens or even use the wrong type of abrasive.

There are temporary solutions for your problems if you know that you have to replace your lens. Using a furniture polish and a microfiber cloth will allow you to temporarily fix the scuff marks. The polish will create a film over the lens and make the scuffs less noticeable, although they will still be there. You will have to apply as needed: usually once a day or every couple of days.

Closing Comments

The best method of not dealing with scratched lenses is to simply not have scratches in the first place! Be very careful with your glasses by putting them in their case when not in use. Also apply for a warranty if you are able to.
