History of Aviator Sunglasses For Men – Origin of Pilot Shades

With many popular celebrities such as Kanye West and Britney Speas wearing pilot shades, aviator sunglasses for men have become extremely popular among the general public. Movies such as Top Gun have also propelled the popularity of these shades as well. What many people do not realize is that aviator sunglasses have been around much longer.

The first pair of aviator sunglasses was originally developed specifically for pilots by none other than Ray Ban in 1936. Not only were these shades extremely comfortable to wear, but they also protected the whole eye from dangerous rays from the sun and helped pilots to see better during their flight missions. The lenses were also built to be impact proof for even better durability.

The design is based off goggles that were currently in use by the U.S. Military at the time. Nothing has changed since then and even the design remains very much similar to the shades created back in the day. In fact, aviator sunglasses for men continue to be issued to pilots around the world not only for their comfort, but also for their ability to protect the pilots’ eyes from the sun.

A year following their debut, Ray Ban began selling these pilot shades to the public and have continued to remain largely popular. In fact, if you go to the Smithsonian museum in Washington, D.C. you’ll see a pair of pilot shades that were worn by NASA astronauts from 1969 when they landed on the moon.

Since its creation, aviator sunglasses for men still continues to remain in style with many people swearing by them. With so many different styles available, you’ll be sure to find what you are looking for. You can even find pilot shades that have lenses that are polarized or mirrored for better visibility. With continued media appearances, these shades will continue to remain a trend.
