Eyeglasses: The Smart, Sexy Accessory Television Has Learned to Love

It’s often said that guys don’t make passes at girls who wear eyeglasses, but some of the hottest characters on TV today would beg to differ. Here are a few leading ladies with glasses who are breaking hearts and taking names.

Jess Day – New Girl. The headliner, Jess Day, is a spunky, adorkable, and relatable woman played by Hollywood “it” girl Zooey Deschanel. The show is anchored around Jess’s love life, beginning with her move into an all-male apartment after a break up. The series has proved successful with critics and viewers alike, earning five Golden Globe nominations and five primetime Emmy nominations.

Amber Holt – Parenthood. The oldest child in the Holt family, Amber Holt is played by Mae Whitman. Whitman was nominated for a Teen Choice Award for Breakout Female Start for her role in this hit drama. Amber is a complex character who is rebellious and struggles with the confines of contemporary family life.

Liz Lemon – 30 Rock. Played by powerhouse Tina Fey, Liz Lemon is a writer and series creator. Liz Lemon was named to Comcast’s list of TV’s Most Intriguing Characters and AOL named her the 14th Most Memorable TV Character. She’s captured the imagination of American audiences by being smart and funny, and she always wears her signature eyeglasses.

Alex Vause -Orange is the New Black. The central character in this Netflix original is sentenced to prison for smuggling drug money to her ex-girlfriend, Alex Vause, played by Laura Prepon. Alex has sleek, dark hair, and her eyes are usually adorned with heavy liner and thick-rimmed eyeglasses. She’s snarky and street smart. In 2014, Laura Prepon won the 18th Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Mindy Lahiri – The Mindy Project. Played by Mindy Kaling, Mindy Lahiri is a highly educated, intelligent doctor, and serves as the focus for this show. Its universal appeal is the reason that it’s broadcast around the world from India to Canada to Europe. In 2012, the Critic’s Choice Awards gave this show the award for Most Exciting New Series.

Amy Farrah Fowler – The Big Bang Theory. Mayim Bialik, best known for Blossom fame, plays this neurobiologist. Introduced as a romantic match for Sheldon, she becomes his girlfriend in the fifth season. For this role, Mayim Bialik was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress in a comedy series in the 2012, 2013, and 2014 Primetime Emmys.

It used to be that TV shows portrayed women with eyeglasses as nerds. They were often ignored, never the object of affection. Just think of Jan compared to Marsha in The Brady Bunch or Velma compared to Daphne in Scooby Doo. However, in the 21st century, girls with eyeglasses are complex, smart, and desirable. They serve as role-models for girls and women across America. The nerdy archetype is a thing of the past.
