Do Children Need Sunglasses?

Adults wear sunglasses to protect their eyes from harmful UV rays and to stay comfortable when outdoors. But it’s also unhealthy for our little ones to constantly strain their eyes in the sun. Their eyes are more sensitive than ours, and they need good sunglasses possibly more than adults do. Sun reflects off of sand, snow, water and pavement, so kids are therefore at a higher risk of damage from repeated sun exposure to their eyes. Constant strain of the eyes and exposure to harmful UV rays can cause future vision problems such as cataracts.

Children can start wearing sunglasses as young as several months. They may pull them off the first few times you try to get them to wear it, but after some patience and a little coaxing, they will eventually learn to like their sunglasses. Kids especially do not like having the sun glare in their face. Take a walk with your child in the stroller while he is wearing his new shades to let him get accustomed to them. He will eventually learn that they keep the bright light out of his eyes.

When buying sunglasses for your child, don’t make a decision simply based on cuteness. The function of the sunglasses is key. Make sure to look for sunglasses that block at least 98% of both UV-A and UV-B rays. But if you can find 100% blockage then that would be best. Try to find frames with slightly large lenses so that the entire eye area can be covered. Wrap around shades may me best for a very young child so that they don’t constantly fall off. Also a child who is very active would benefit from wrap around shades which will stay in place.

Doctors recommend only impact resistant lenses for children, such as Polycarbonate or Trivex lenses. These lenses offer a natural UVA and UVB protection.

As far as the color of the lenses, specialists urge parents to buy only brown and gray colored lenses for their children, or any neutral color. Different colored lenses such as blue, purple and pink may be fun for the child to wear, but in fact they offer very little protection from UV rays. Have a pair of colorful sunglasses for your child to wear at home or in the late afternoon when the sun is not high.

Proper eye care is important for people of all ages, but especially children. Most damage from the sun happens before a child is 18 years old, so parents should take the necessary precautions in getting their child good quality sunglasses.
