Trends for fashion come and go, and some trends are essentially a fusion of two existing styles. This is the case for cat eye sunglasses, the latest trend for designer sunglasses. Although cat eye styles have been popular in the past, they combine two or, in some cases, three looks – rounded styles from the 1950’s and the angular wayfarer look from the 1980’s. The latter, in fact, has been popular over the last three years and, as a result, the emergence of cat eye sunglasses by designer brands was inevitable.
When celebrities are spotted wearing a certain style, you know it will gain popularity by the public over the next few months. This has been the case with this particular style. The summer of 2010 saw various female celebrities in Hollywood sporting the cat eye look. At first glance, the designer sunglasses, when spotted on a celebrity in a tabloid magazine, look like wayfarers at a distance. But, then, you take a second glance and realize that there’s something different about the style. Many celebrities, from A-listers to Lindsay Lohan on her way to prison, have been seen wearing various versions of these sunglasses, and designer brands, as a result, have added them to their product lines.
Cat eye sunglasses combine two basic styles into one frame. The wayfarer look is essentially the template for these sunglasses, but the bottom half of the frame is rounded instead of angular and the top part, rather, is swooped instead of straight. Additionally, these designer sunglasses come in several sizes. Some are as small as a pair of wayfarers, while others are nearly as large as rounded oversized sunglasses.
Of course, a trend isn’t created not to have some variation, and many designer sunglasses with the cat eye look do just that. Rather than a solely rounded frame, for example, some have a strictly angular style on the top and bottom. Others, additionally, take the 1950s influence a step further and use a mock tortoise frame to convey a vintage-like – but not dated – style.
