Are Cycling Sunglasses Really Necessary?

Cycling sunglasses are really just ordinary sunglasses, but they have special lens, and anyone can wear them.

Cycling sunglasses have become increasingly more popular in recent years, for those people who spend a lot of time in the saddle, and wish to have the best possible protection for their eyes. These glasses have polarized lens, that neutralize the sun’s glare, making it much more comfortable than ordinary sunglasses, and safer.

In all the major cycle races, e.g. the Tour De France, the contestants all wear these special sunglasses, they are very light weight, and have nylon frames that fit snug to the face, they also revert to the original shape when removed. These glasses provide not only protection from UV rays, but they also have shatterproof frames.

The principal feature of cycling sunglasses, and in my opinion, the most important one is, the special feature, reducing the sun’s glare, allowing the cyclist to look directly at the sun, see where He/She is going, thus reducing the risk of accidents.

In fact these glasses are designed for use in extreme sport, because they stand up to severe climatic conditions. More and more sports people are now wearing these glasses, baseball players, snow skiers, fishermen etc.

Most sunglasses manufactures, now design cycling sunglasses, but shop carefully, and do not just go for the trendy ones, ensure you are buying glasses that will give you the utmost protection. Looking ultra cool is all very well, but the object of the cycling sunglasses, is to protect your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun. When buying your glasses, look for lenses that have at least 95% protection. If you decide to shop online for your biking sunglasses, there is a facility of checking the UV rating, so you know what protection you will have. You can also have your prescription added to the lens.

My advice is, don’t go cheap, if you wear ordinary sunglasses when cycling, and have a fall, more than likely the glass will shatter, and could cause permanent eye damage. Good glasses will not fog up when you perspire, they are well designed, so some of the air rushing by is diverted, due to well placed vents, eradicating the condensed perspiration that accumulated inside your lens. Cycling sunglasses really stick like glue, and will stay in position no matter what happens.

So to answer the question, ‘Are Cycling Sun glasses really necessary’ a definite YES so, before your next cycling trip, invest in a good pair of cycling sunglasses, and give your eyes that vital protection.
