Buying a pair of spectacles today is an expensive purchase I know first hand as I have worn glasses for 29 of my 34 years. However I am lucky as I have worked in the optics industry for 17 years since I left school. Thankfully I have never had to pay full retail cost for my specs. As I am highly myopic with a large astigmatism if I did have to pay the full cost of glasses I would find it a bit painful as I like designer frames and I need 1.74 index lenses which would probably set me back £400.00 to £500.00 in a high street opticians.
I recently visited a high street opticians to have a look at what frames they were stocking and what prices they were charging and to check out their offers. Some of their prices were on the high side. Even with their various offers like 2 for 1 you could quite easily pay £300.00 plus for a pair of glasses, especially by the time the sales assistant has sold you the added extras. It was also quite entertaining for me as when I showed my prescription to the dispenser I could see their face light up they quickly sat me down and started going through a style consultation and offered me advice on the best lenses to go for. The advice they offered me was great and the dispenser did give me a very honest opinion, it just that their prices were incredibly high.
If I did not work in the industry then I would struggle to pay the high costs for spectacles that opticians charge these days. In fact I would probably just have the one pair every 2 years meaning I would be stuck with the same pair and not have no option to change if I fancied a different look. And when you have no hair like I do it is very hard to change your look without growing a full beard or going for the awful comb over look. Anyway my alternative would be to order my glasses online. There are many websites out there today that offer excellent value for money on their glasses and the delivery times are great as well. I know certain high street opticians where you have to wait 3 weeks even for basic prescriptions and simple lenses and they charge crazy prices.
Some people are little hesitant of buying their spec online with the fear if something goes wrong what will I do, what if I don’t like the frame etc. All online retailer of glasses will have a returns policy and some sites even allow you to try the glasses in the comfort of your own home. With a bit of research when looking for your glasses you can find some great deals and sometimes it pays to have a look at the smaller independent sites rather than the main ones.
