See Eyeglass Doctor Immediately If You Suffer From Macular Degeneration

As a person gets older it is important for him to visit an eyeglasses doctor to get his vision checked out if he notices any loss of sight. This is especially so if this person is a driver because failure to do so could lead to loss of life, or manslaughter.

Some people experience macular degeneration as they age. The effects of this are blind spots out of nowhere and blurry vision. The tissues in one’s eye get weaker and deteriorate with time. There is no known magic bullet for this at the moment but there are new theoretical treatments in the pipeline that have yet to pass their final tests with the FDA.

When it comes to macular degeneration there are two classifications: dry and wet.

Dry Macular Degeneration

People who have the “dry” version will experience blurriness. Words, letters, numbers, colors, and people will not be as sharp and transparent as they once were. A person who suffers from this would have a more difficult time recognizing people whom he has known for a while. Objects will get a bit more hazier and more powerful lights will be needed.

Not all the time will dry macular degeneration affect BOTH eyes. Many times just one is affected and the other eye will have to do twice the work. This puts a tremendous strain on that particular eye and soon enough it will wear out faster than the one that was the problem.

Wet Macular Degeneration

The “wet” kind does not occur as often. But, as you can guess it is more serious in nature. With this one things are not how they really are. Square lines may look circle, straight lines are squiggly, and things will seem VERY far when in reality they are very close. Blurry spots are also a common problem with wet macular degeneration.

This problem expands rapidly and if you notice some of these symptoms take action immediately. Only seeing a certified eye doctor or specialist can the degeneration be slowed or halted.

The most common treatment used by optometrists are eye injections. There are two different medications that can be used and they have a fairly good success rate.

So how can a person prevent getting macular degeneration?

Genetics is a big factor. There are some people who live a very healthy life and get it. Nevertheless, eating right (including vegetables with beta carantine), proper exercise, avoiding drugs and excessive alcohol, and overall nutrition is the best way to put yourself in a great position to prevent the degenerative disease.
