Basics of Modern Motorcycle Goggles

Motorcycle goggles are important to any motorcycle rider. They can protect your eyes from the elements as well as the sun and flying objects. Here’s a look at the basics of modern motorcycle goggles:

Shatter Resistant

Shatter resistance is one of the main reasons you would wear eye protection while riding a motorcycle. Your eyes need protection from rocks, pebbles, bugs and anything else that can fly your way. An object that flies at you from another vehicle, for example, can cause a horrible injury to your eye. Shatter resistance is a feature you simply cannot be without. One of the most popular materials used in shatter resistant goggles is polycarbonate, which is a liquid plastic material known for its strength. Developed in the 1970’s, the materials has been used in astronaut’s helmets and for other aerospace related applications.

Glare

Glare can be a big problem for motorcyclists. A good pair of goggles will protect the eyes from glare, usually with a special tinting. Glare can cause problems with visibility and even temporarily blind a rider, so wearing goggles with an anti-glare feature is crucial.

Anti-Fog

A motorcyclist will wear their goggles in many types of weather conditions. Heat, cold, humidity, mist, fog, rain, snow, wind, in every condition, anti-fog can possibly become important. Anti-fog usually means that the inside of your goggles have a special coating that prevents them from fogging up and distorting your view. Obviously, anti-fog is crucial, as when riding your bike, you can’t quickly take off your goggles and wipe them out if needed.

Comfort

Comfort is also an essential ingredient in a good pair of motorcycle goggles. The strap should offer adjustability for all sizes and shapes of heads. Maximum flexibility and adjustability is crucial since some riders wear no helmet, wear a half helmet or wear a larger helmet. The strap should be able to accommodate whatever choice of helmet you make. In addition, the padding around the goggles is extremely important since this material touches your face. The material should be soft, conform to your facial features easily and provide maximum comfort.

Sun Protection

It’s no secret that UV rays can do damage to your eyes, especially if you have any type of eye problems or sensitive eyes. One of the main goals of motorcycle goggles is to protect your eyes from the sun’s harsh rays. UV protection is built into most goggles. It is usually in the form of a coating on the outside or between the lens. You’ll want to look specifically for UV400 filtered goggles if you want the maximum possible protection for your eyes against the sun.

Styles

There are many styles of motorcycle goggles today. Whether you want an understated look that simply looks like a pair of sunglasses or whether you want big, bug eyed goggles, whatever your style, you will find a look that you’re comfortable with. The latest technology in goggles allows you to interchange lenses for whatever condition or look you need. Even prescription motorcycle goggles are now available.
