My Problem
As a long term wearer of glasses my condition is an extremely common one – myopia, or, near-sightedness. My vision is OK (but not perfect) when reading, but absolutely terrible for anything distance related. In an almost self defeating way I accepted that glasses were with me for life. I have dabbled with contact lenses but I find them difficult to use and not at all comfortable after a few hours. They just don’t work for me. Laser vision is another alternative, until I heard that it may not fix my eyesight long term, nor correct the astigmatism that I suffer. It’s also expensive.
My Discovery
So, after reading about Dr W.H.Bates, an ophthalmologist going back to the 1900s, I was intrigued to discover that during his career he did not encourage the wearing of glasses, or if he did prescribe them they were usually weaker than required. His basic philosophy was that the eye could be encouraged to see perfectly without glasses through the use of eye relaxation, and focussing techniques. His belief (proven by countless experiments) was that the muscles of the eye controlled focussing, not the lens, and therefore it was possible to bring the eye back into clear vision. He reasoned that modern activities such as reading and writing was much more common now than in the days of early man where hunting involved long distance vision, and the evolution of the eyes to see afar were naturally “at rest” and in a relaxed state. Anything involving near point focussing required mental strain.
A Warning
Before I begin with the relaxation techniques it is important to understand that if you wear glasses to drive or to work or basically anything that involves a degree of risk of injury to you or others, it is naturally common sense to wear them. Bringing your vision back to perfect is a long process and requires work, it is not a one day cure.
The Activities
The first activity involves the simple art of palming:
1. Sit at a table, or on the floor if you desire. Remove glasses.
2. Rub your hands together to generate heat.
3. Place your hands over your face so that the palms face over your eyes but not touching them.
4. Close your eyes and relax them completely.
5. Feel the heat of your palms dissolve in and around the eye area.
6. Do this for 30 seconds at a time, and repeat as necessary.
The second activity involves swinging of the eyes:
1. Stand up and remove your glasses.
2. Gently move your head left to right, and back again, in a slow swinging motion.
3. Your eyes will naturally try to focus on objects about the room as you move your head. Do not allow this to happens. Simply let your eyes relax and unfocus.
4. Do this for a few minutes. Your eyes should feel refreshed.
Finally, a focussing technique:
1. Search the internet for a “snellen card” – this is the famous test card containing letters that gradually get smaller as you read down the card.
2. Print it out and paste about 6 metres (20 feet) from you.
3. Remove your glasses and simply cover each eye at a time and read the card, making an attempt to define the shape of each letter as you read along and down.
4. Read the card a few times daily, ideally in the morning.
These are just a few easy things you can do to help improve your vision. Practice them daily and you eyes will feel relaxed and begin to see clearer than ever.
