FFor years we’ve heard, “It’s all fun a games until someone gets hit in the eye.” Well, in the fast paced world of motocross racing, that’s exactly what can happen. You must protect your eyes. You motorcycle goggles are one of your most important purchases. Yes, the quality of your motocross helmet is very important, but equally important is the quality of your motorcycle goggles.
Don’t be cheap about buying your goggles. It’s not like they’re as expensive as the helmet so go ahead and buy the best pair that you can afford. A quality pair of goggles will protect your eyes from the massive amounts of dirt that is thrown into your face.
The price range for a beginner’s pair of goggles is between $15.00 and $20.00. This price range of goggles is adequate for a beginner. An average price for a good pair will be around $35 – $50. That’s not a lot of money to protect your eyes.
Make sure that your goggles fit the contours of you helmet. They should fit comfortably on your face and be easily integrated with your helmet.
The next thing you’ll want to check out can be done by what I call the Motocross Riding Simulation or MRS if you like acronyms. Your line of sight must be unimpeded. While wearing the goggles, move you eyes to the left and right. Do you mostly see the rim of the goggles or do you have a clear line of sight? Now roll your eyes all the way up and all the way down. Observe if there are any obstructions caused by the goggles.
For the next step, with the goggles securely on your head, jump up and down several times. Do the goggles slide up or down. They shouldn’t move at all. Next jerk your head to the right or to the left. Again, your goggles shouldn’t move at all. The reason you want to do this is, after all, when you are on your bike, you’re going to pull some G forces and they will not be smooth at all.
If your goggles don’t pass the MRS, you’re going to have trouble with them on the track? Take your time and enjoy the process. Remember, no sport is worth losing your eyesight over.
