Sunglasses Care – How to Look After Your Sunglasses

Sunglasses are essential when you are spending a lot of time out in the sun. They protect the eyes from ultraviolet and blue rays, not to mention they are a great fashion accessory! Some of us will spend a lot of money for a good pair, a pair that should see us through a few summers. However, if you are unaware of how to take proper care for them, your sunglasses might not last as long as you had hoped.

Follow the tips below for a fool-proof method of taking care of your sunnies!

  1. Check your sunglasses on a regular basis, especially if you wear them often. It is quite possible that the screws of the glass will at some time become loose. Be sure to tighten them if this is the case, otherwise it can lead to discomfort and if left, the screws might fall out completely.
  2. If your sunglasses appear to be unaligned, get them altered straightaway. Don’t risk further damage by doing this yourself, always consult a professional, preferably the place where you purchased them.
  3. Scratches are one of the most prevailing problems in sunglasses. It is worth buying a pair with scratch resistant lenses and when they are not being worn carry them in a protective case. A hard or soft case will be ideal for storing your glasses when not being used, preventing damage or too much sun exposure.
  4. Like most things, sunglasses should be kept clean. There are special cleaning lotions for this, but its just as easy to make your own with a little dish washing liquid and lukewarm water. To clean the lens, use a lint-free cloth and a little of the cleaning solution with a very cautious and light pressure. This should remove any finger marks, suncream and the likes. Complete the process with a dry cloth.
  5. For the nose pads, its better to submerge your sunglasses in lukewarm water for around half an hour. Any dirt or grime will have softened and can be scrubbed away gently with an old toothbrush or similar tool. One word of warning – if you own a pair of polarized, this is not advisable as the water can do more harm than good.
  6. Sounds very simple, but use both hands when applying or removing your sunglasses. This will help to abstain from any impairment of the frame.
  7. Be weary of where you place your sunglasses when not on your face. So many people leave them in exposure to the sun and this can damage the frame, particularly if they are made from materials such as plastic.
  8. Just a reminder – don’t allow your polarized sunglasses to get wet and if this does occur, dry them at once.

If you follow this advice, your sunglasses will be hanging around with you a little bit longer!
