How to Choose Sunglasses?

Most people consider sunglasses as an accessory only – something like the watch-addition to the general style. Yes, in general sense they are right – we can live without sunglasses. But scientists and meteorologists began too often to talk about solar flares, increased solar radiation, etc. We know that the skin around the eyes is delicate. So, sunglasses are not only used to adjust visually the shape of the face in order to make the image more interesting. They are not only used in police style, i. e. to hide the eyes.

They are not only used in old-intellectual-drunkard style who wants to hide his/her hangover. They are not only used by aging lady who had not enough time to put on makeup and put glasses to hide what is usually hidden under thick layers of black makeup. Modern sunglasses should protect from harmful UV radiation. This is their most important role. The eyes are very sensitive organs and that is why they should be well kept or otherwise they can be damaged.

How to choose the correct protecting UV factor?

There are three standards for categorization of sunglasses-American, European and Australian. A-categories are 5 and are numbered with Arabic numerals:

0- for non-sunny days because they let 100% UV;

1- for less sunny days-let from 50 to 80% UV;

2- sunglasses for common use-they let from 25 to 43% UV;

3- sunglasses for bright sun- they let 18% UV;

4- sunglasses for situations with strong solar activity-they let 8% UV.

The first three categories are used only for beauty and correction of the visual image of the face. The fourth category for general use can be used only on the beach or in the mountains during winter. The last category is for special use-for athletes (hockey, mountain climbers, etc.). It is good to note that categories 4 and 5 are forbidden to be used from drivers.

What to choose-glass or plastic?

Lenses of temporary sunglasses are not glass but plastic-polycarbonate. This is first, because of the safety and second, because the polycarbonate is more lightweight. But the disadvantage of polycarbonate is that it can be easily scratched. The choice whether to tint your lenses or buy polycarbonate is yours. It is more important to know that the color of the lenses should not distort the perception of the environmental reality (you do not need pink glasses). Most suitable are grey or brownish color. They do not irritate the eye as much as the others.

How to choose the frame?

The shape of the frame and the material-plastic or metal is selected according to your own preferences. However, if you want to wear sunglasses just for cosmetic purposes, you can choose larger glasses that will hide most of the skin around the eyes.
