Eyeglasses have two main components- an eyeframe and the lens. Depending on your required level of visual correction, your lenses can differ in material, thickness and many more aspects. The most annoying thing for strong prescription holders is that with high power one has to wear thicker glasses that are heavier and alter the appearance. This made it troublesome for strong prescription holders to feel comfortable wearing their glasses for long hours. But with the availability of high index lenses it’s now possible to get thinner glasses for stronger prescriptions too. So, if you’re annoyed by your heavy spectacles, read on to know how high index ones can help you achieve comfort and look better.
What are High Index Lenses?
The lenses in our spectacles bend the light before it reaches the eyes to bend it and focus the image properly on the retina. For farsighted prescriptions require concave lenses that pushes the light into the middle of the lens whereas for nearsightedness they are curved so that light is bent toward the top or bottom of the eye, towards the retina.
The index value is the efficiency to bend light. Increase in the index value means the light is better refracted, thus requiring thinner lenses than usual. The usual ones made from glass or plastic have lower index values, around 1.5 making them thicker than the High index lenses that come in Index values 1.67 and 1.74. The higher the index value, the thinner they are. But these are more expensive than regular plastic or glass. The basic benefits of these high index lenses are:
- Thinner: Thinner lenses mean comfortable wearing experience and less stress on your nose bridge. On a daily basis, the thin and lightweight lenses make wearing spectacles easier and more comfortable.
- Eyes Don’t Look Magnified or Smaller: Since these are flatter than the regular ones, they don’t make your eyes look magnified or smaller than normal.
- Allows More Light To Pass: Due to the high index values, these allow more amounts of light to pass through and they reflect lesser amounts of light. Anti reflective properties make it a great choice for everyday. This is especially true for driving at night.
These are great for higher prescription eyeglass wearers who are annoyed by their bulky thick glasses and want to experience thinner lenses that offer greater visual clarity. High index lenses from index values 1.67 and 1.74 make it easier to have higher prescription values as well as add to your aesthetic value.
