For many years, since I was 8 years old in fact, I’ve had poor eyesight and needed to wear glasses. In my late teens I moved onto contact lenses, and in my thirties I had laser surgery.
As you may, or may not, know laser surgery isn’t always a permanent solution – it wasn’t for me and after about 5 years I noticed my eyesight at night wasn’t quite so crisp.
Fearing that my eyesight would degrade back to the point of needing glasses or contact lenses again I started looking for ways to improve my eye health in general.
Below, are my top 5 tips for maintaining, and improving, the health of your eyes and improving your vision naturally.
Supplements
I’m not talking about drugs here, just about the vitamins and minerals that your body needs to maintain good eye health.
Taking a good quality multi-vitamin is the best place to start to supplement a balanced diet to ensure you are getting the right types and right quantities of each vitamin and mineral your eyes need to be healthy.
Diet
A poor diet can lead to many health problems, and your eyes are not immune to this.
Maintaining a good healthy balanced diet is the first step to improving your health in general, and improving your eye health specifically.
Try to include a wide variety of colorful vegetables and leafy greens, and where possible stick to natural products.
Accupressure & Massage
Accupressure is essentially accupuncture without the needles. Using your fingers to massage around the eyes can help to relax the muscles and give your eyes a much-needed rest.
Think how good your body feels after a good massage and realize that the same will apply to your eyes.
Rest
Building onto the previous point, simply resting your eyes more often throughout the day is another good way of giving them a break, so to speak.
This is more important in these times of increased use of computer monitors and TV viewing – just take a minute every hour to close your eyes and let them relax.
You can also cover your eyes gently with the palms of your hands to help block out all light.
Eye Exercises
Building on the work of holistic opthamologists, eye exercises are intended to help strengthen and improve the flexibility of the muscles that control the eyes with the intention of improving the eyes ability to focus.
There are many simple exercises you can practise, and should practise daily, that can help you develop near and far focusing, and help maintain the eyes natural ability to track objects within your field of vision.
As you can see, these five tips all serve to maintain your eyes with the ultimate goal of improving your vision without the need for glasses, contacts, or laser surgery.
My recommendation is that you work on each of these daily and build them into your daily routines. Work on them until they become a habit.
