There was a time when finding out you needed to wear glasses may have felt like the end of the world. The good news is that you no longer have to fear looking nerdy in a pair of readers (unless that is the look you are specifically going for, in which case, you have options, too!).
First, find a style of frame that is flattering for the shape of your face.
Square — A strong jaw-line in addition to a broad forehead on a face that is equal in proportion to all its measurements is considered square-faced. Soften the sharp features of your face with rounded frames, especially ones that are wider than they are tall.
Oval — An oval-shaped face is longer from top to bottom than it is from side to side. To balance frames with your face, find some that are taller. The depth of the glasses will balance the length of your face.
Round — Round-shaped faces are overall equally proportional from top to bottom and side to side, with soft features and lines. Find frames that utilize interesting angles and lines to lengthen and thin the appearance of your face.
Heart — The sweet look of a heart-shaped face is one that has a broad forehead that comes down to a narrow, pointed chin. Frames that are narrower on the top than they are on the bottom provides a complimentary balance to your face. Also worth considering are frameless variations of eyewear.
Next, consider is your eye color. Finding a stylish color of frames that compliment the shade of your iris will not only create a lovely balance but also can be terribly flattering to your eye color.
Green — Pop on some purple frames for a flattering compliment to your emerald eyes. Frames that feature multiple colors are also a great option, especially if there is a touch of green in there that your eyes can help illuminate.
Brown — Warm, brown eyes are lucky, as just about any color looks great alongside them. Especially consider colors that add a bit of gold to them, such as olive green. That allows the brown of your eyes to pull out the complimentary shades in the frames.
Hazel — Hazel eyes are a beautiful mix of green and brown in varying degrees that make them very unique. Play off of that with frames that highlight the more subtle colors in your hazel eyes. For example, if your eyes are more green than brown, find a pair of gold or tortoise shell frames to pull out those lesser-seen flecks. If they are more brown than green, go green.
Blue — Stark, solid colors are flattering as frames to blue eyes. Something like dark brown or even solid black frames can be exceptionally stunning, making your eyes look even brighter and more vivid.
Once you have gone through the basics of face shape and eye color, then the fun really begins. But remember; just because you are blue-eyed with an oval face does not mean you can only wear black rectangular frames. You simply have the knowledge now to surmise what looks might be more flattering on you.
Try on multiple shapes and colors of eyeglasses and take pictures of what you like. These pictures are super helpful because you can bring them home and review them yourself and with friends.
Also take into consideration your wardrobe. If you find yourself wearing a lot of neutral colors, perhaps something like a gold-flecked tortoise shell would do you good. If your wardrobe consists of a wide variety of colors, patterns and looks, perhaps something more along the lines of frameless would better suit your style. Or maybe you just want a bright pair of red frames, even if it does not match anything you own. If that is your style, then do it, and wear it proudly!
