A discussion is presented on radiation damages which can be produced by alpha particles in glassy materials doped with rare earth elements. For the present analysis a 1% concentration of neodymium, samarium and gadolinium in a typical soda- lime glass has been considered. Nuclear data for the alpha-emitters rare earth radioisotopes **1**4**4Nd, **1**4**7Sm, **1**4**8Sm, and**1**5**2Gd have been utilized to calculate the density of alpha emission events occurring during 1 h and the corresponding amount of energy released in the decays.
